What is ADHD?

ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders, with an estimated 2.7% of adults having the disorder.

Everyone’s experience with ADHD is different and evolves throughout their lifetime in conjunction with one’s relationships, work, school and home environments. There is a layered impact of normative systems and expectations placed on people, which can highly affect the self-perception and confidence of someone with ADHD.

Getting an accurate diagnosis provides an explanation for the struggles a person has faced in their life and allows them to start accepting themselves and redefine what they once believed to be their weaknesses.

ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in both children and adults.

It’s characterized by difficulty controlling behaviours (impulsivity), staying focused (inattention) and/or being overly active (hyperactivity).

These symptoms can make it challenging to perform academically, at work and with their daily functioning.

Although ADHD doesn’t cause other psychological or developmental problems, other disorders often occur along with ADHD, such as

This can make treatment more challenging.

Although it is often first diagnosed in childhood, there has been a rise in adults diagnosed with ADHD.

Adult ADHD systems may not be as clear as those in children, and many adults are often unaware they have it. For adults, hyperactivity may decrease but struggles with impulsiveness, restlessness, and difficulty paying attention continue. This makes everyday tasks like getting ready for the day, getting to work on time and staying productive and organized can be extremely difficult and overwhelming.
