Trauma Therapy

What is Trauma?

Trauma results from exposure to an event or events that a person finds emotionally disturbing or life-threatening. This experience overwhelms the individual’s ability to cope and can cause lasting adverse effects on their mental, physical, emotional and/or spiritual well-being.

Traumatic events can happen at any age and cause long-lasting harm; the effects may be revealed quickly or years afterward. However, not everyone who experiences a stressful event will develop trauma; everyone reacts differently.

People affected by trauma may develop unhealthy coping mechanisms like unhealthy eating or substance use to help alleviate the emotional and/or physical pain they feel.

Trauma also impacts relationships. Being exposed to a traumatic event may cause someone to feel unsafe, betrayed and/or have difficulty trusting others. Connection with others is key to a healthy mindset. Therefore, these unhealthy beliefs about relationships can lead to heightened negative emotions and put trauma survivors at risk for other mental health conditions.
