Developmental History

The assessment process usually begins with a thorough developmental history interview with the child’s parents or caregivers. This interview gathers information about the child’s early milestones, developmental progress, and any concerns or observations.

Observation

Direct observations of the child’s behavior and interactions in different settings, such as home, school, or clinical settings, are often conducted by trained professionals. This helps assess social communication skills, play behaviors, and repetitive behaviors.

Autism-Specific Assessment Tools

Standardized assessment tools designed to evaluate autism-related symptoms may be used. These tools often include items that assess communication, social interaction, and repetitive behaviors.

Communication Assessment

Assessment of the child’s communication skills, including language development, speech articulation, and nonverbal communication, is typically requested. You may already have this completed or the assessor will request you have one completed and may make referrals to speech and language therapists.

Social Interaction Assessment

Evaluations of the child’s ability to engage in age-appropriate social interactions and develop relationships with peers and adults are essential components of the assessment.

Cognitive Assessment

Intellectual and cognitive functioning is typically assessed to understand the child’s overall developmental level and identify strengths and challenges.

Common tools for cognitive assessment include the Wechsler Intelligence Scales (e.g., WISC or WPPSI).

Sensory and Motor Assessment

Some assessments may include a review of sensory sensitivities and motor skills, as sensory issues and motor difficulties can be associated with autism. This assessment is completed by an occupational therapist, we can make referrals if you do not have this done.

Behavior Assessment

An assessment of challenging behaviors, self-regulation, and emotional regulation may be included to develop a better understanding of the child’s behavior.

Parent and Teacher Questionnaires

Parents and teachers may be asked to complete questionnaires about the child’s behavior, development, and social interactions.

Family History

Information about the child’s family history, especially regarding autism or related conditions, can be valuable in the assessment process.

Feedback and Diagnosis

Following the assessment, the evaluating team will provide feedback to the parents or caregivers, discuss the diagnosis (if applicable), and recommend appropriate interventions and support services.
