When to Consider Counselling & Therapyfor Your Teen

Emotional Distress

If your teen is experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, or other emotional issues, counselling and therapy can help them manage these feelings and develop coping strategies.

Behavioral Problems

If your teen is engaging in disruptive or concerning behaviors at home, school, or in the community, counselling and therapy can address the underlying issues and provide guidance on behavior management.

Academic Struggles

If your teen is struggling academically, falling behind in school, or facing learning challenges, a child psychologist assessment specialist can help identify the issues and provide educational assessments.

Substance Abuse

If you suspect or have evidence that your teen is using drugs or alcohol, counselling can address substance abuse issues and provide strategies for prevention and recovery for your teen and you.

Peer and Social Issues

If your teen is dealing with bullying, peer pressure, social isolation, or difficulties in forming healthy relationships, counselling and therapy can help them develop social skills and resilience.

Family Conflict

If your family is experiencing ongoing conflicts or communication breakdowns, family counselling can provide a space for all family members, including your teen, to work on resolving these issues.

Grief and Loss

If your teen has experienced the loss of a loved one or is dealing with grief, counselling can help them process their emotions and navigate the grieving process.

What to Expect in Counselling Sessions

Initial Assessment

The Therapist will conduct an initial assessment to understand your teen’s concerns, history, and goals. They may also ask about family dynamics and other relevant information. This will be done through an initial session with the parents and a separate initial session with the teen.

Establishing Trust

Building a trusting relationship between your teen and the therapist is crucial. Therapists are trained to create a safe and non-judgmental space where your teen can express themselves.

Exploration and Expression

Counselling sessions provide a platform for your teen to explore their thoughts and feelings. They will be encouraged to express themselves openly and honestly.

Goal Setting

The Therapist and your teen will work together to establish specific goals. These goals guide the counselling and therapeutic process and measure progress. The Therapist and teen will decide how to update parents with their goals and progress as here at WJW we believe in team and that means you as parents need to know how your teen is doing.

Coping Strategies

The Therapist will teach your teen coping strategies and skills to manage their emotions and address their specific concerns.

Problem Solving

If your teen is facing specific challenges, such as academic or behavioral issues, the Therapist will work with them to develop problem-solving skills.

Support and Validation

Your teen will receive support, validation, and empathy from the Therapist, helping them feel heard and understood.

Feedback and Communication

You, as the parent or guardian, may also be involved in the counselling process. The Therapist may provide feedback and guidance on how to support your teen effectively.

Privacy and Confidentiality

Psychologists and Mental Health therapists typically maintain strict confidentiality. However, they will inform your teen about the limits of confidentiality and when they may need to break it for safety or legal reasons.

Progress Monitoring

Therapy progress will be regularly assessed, and adjustments to the treatment plan may be made as needed.

Ultimately, therapy or counselling for your teen aims to provide them with the tools, support, and skills necessary to navigate challenges, improve their emotional well-being, and work toward their goals and parent’s involvement could be crucial towards helping your teen reach improved well-being and functioning.   We also believe that counselling is a tool towards becoming a resilient and well-balanced person and it is not intended to last a lifetime.  At WJW Counselling we move people towards a better today in the very first session.
