Steps to Begin Counselling for your Child or Teen

Steps to Begin Counselling for Your Child

1. Find a Therapist:
– Use our “Find a Therapist” tool to match with the right counsellor. This tool helps you find a professional who specializes in working with children and teens, ensuring the best fit for your child’s needs.

2. Book an Initial Parent Session:
– For children 17 and under, start by booking an initial parent session. During this session, the therapist will:
– Gather consent for counseling.
– Collect background history about your child or teen.
– Understand your goals for your child or teen’s counseling.

3. Schedule a Child/Teen Session:
– After the parent session, book a separate session for your child or teen. This allows the therapist to meet and interact with your child directly.

4. Complete Intake Forms:
– Parent Intake Form: If the initial session is booked under your name, you will receive an intake form. This form allows us to direct bill your medical plan.
– Child/Teen Intake Form: You will also receive an intake form specifically for your child or teen. This form includes:
– Medical plan details for billing.
– Mandatory consents for counselling.

5. First Parent Session Overview:
– During the first session with your child or teen, the therapist will:
– Discuss confidentiality specific to counseling children and teens.
– Explain file access and the purpose of maintaining records.
– Conduct a comprehensive assessment to understand your child’s needs better.

6. Ongoing Sessions:
– Regularly scheduled therapy sessions will follow, based on the initial assessment and your child or teen’s specific needs. These sessions may involve various therapeutic techniques tailored to your child’s age and issues.

7. Parental Involvement:
– Depending on your child’s age and the therapeutic approach, the therapist may schedule periodic parent sessions to discuss progress, provide guidance, and adjust goals as needed.

8. Additional Resources:
– You may be provided with resources, such as reading materials or activities, to support your child’s progress between sessions.

9. Feedback and Adjustment:
– Continuous feedback is essential. Share any concerns or observations with the therapist to ensure the counselling approach remains effective and aligned with your child’s evolving needs.

By following these steps, you can ensure a smooth and effective start to your child or teen’s counselling journey, providing them with the support and guidance they need.
